UUFSMA Newsletter April 16, 2018
The Mission of this Fellowship is to serve the spirit as each individual understands it; to serve the educational and pastoral needs of our own community; and to serve our multicultural community through actions that further social justice.

Volunteer Spotlight

Jon Sievert has been President of the UUF, on the Board and Sunday Service Committee for 12 years. He's been on the Social Action Committee for years and now serves on the Minister Search Committee. Every week he submits articles about our speakers to the Atencion, which is no small feat as, at times, all he is given is the briefest outline and has to grab words out of air! And, with his music background, he is the perfect choice to select and arrange for our special music during Sunday programs.
Thanks, Jon!

Care Team

In the sense in which we can ever be said to be at home in the world, we are at home not through dominating or explaining, or appreciating, but through caring and being cared for.
— Milton Mayeroff

Hello from your UUFSMA Care Team!

Our warmest wishes for a prompt recovery to Ellie Goodwin who has been diagnosed with mono. Ellie has some excellent doctors and hopes to be well enough soon to receive visitors.

Save the date for a presentation and “meet and greet” the physicians and the staff at UNIMED. Be Well San MIguel is inviting its members and the larger community to an event at La Casona on the 19th of April from 5 to 6:30 PM.

Medical Director Dr. Emilio Ramirez of UNIMED Hospital will give a talk on the local capacity for meeting new international standards for management of emergency cardiac and stroke symptoms in San Miguel de Allende. CEO Julio Cabrajal will give a presentation on new and upcoming plans for expansion of the facility.

There will be an opportunity to meet the newest staff of UNIMED and Be Well San Miguel and to ask questions. UNIMED staff is working hard to respond to community demand and needs and would like to welcome your questions and concerns.

Food and drink will be served, and RSVP is required!

Children’s Program
The Board wants to give young families the opportunity to have a spiritual and community experience on Sundays.  We believe that a Sunday Children's Program is key to meeting that goal.  The team working to grow our current program and arrange spiritual experiences for children developed a poster for places where children and parents might see it.  We welcome your suggestions on where to publicize our program.  Please drop by the Welcome Table with your ideas.
Pebble Clean-up Help Needed
Cynthia Claus, who cleans up and puts away the tray with the pebble container on it after each service is leaving SMA for three months on May 1. Eleanor Lewis is her summer replacement, but she can’t start until Mah 20th.  Is there someone out there who could do this very simple — but very important — job the frst three Sundays in May?  Email Cynthia at cclaus731@gmail.com and she’ll be happy to train you before she leaves.

You Do the Hokey Pokey

Rev. Jake Morrill

At this Sunday’s Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Service, the Rev. Jake Morrill discusses the difficulty of making a whole-hearted commitment to personally implement the values we espouse.

Many people grew up singing the familiar song, "The Hokey Pokey," with its accompanying dance. It goes "You put your left hand in. You put your left hand out. You put your left hand in, and you shake it all about." The song continues in this fashion, with different body parts, until the last verse, which goes, "You put your whole self in...." In lives of faith, and of moral commitment, most of us are wary of putting our whole selves in. We might be comfortable dipping in a toe, or testing the waters. We might be comfortable offering an opinion. But whole-hearted commitment? Putting our whole lives in? Isn’t that too extreme?

Rev. Morrill will address the possible causes of resistance to whole-hearted commitment to personally implementing the values we espouse--the legitimate reasons we might shy away from the fray. He'll discuss the relative appeal of immersing oneself in pleasure and comfort, as opposed to the discomfort and fractiousness a life of integrity can invite. And then he will share some of what he sees as the rewards of the whole-hearted life, no matter the cost, as well as the clarity and courage such a commitment might take. The talk will include stories of noteworthy ditherers, including himself.

Jake Morrill, a native of East Tennessee, is husband to Molly, with whom he enjoys raising two sons. For fifteen years, he has served as Lead Minister of the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church, in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, from which he's on sabbatical until early May. Jake enjoys writing, and, last fall, released his second book of fiction, a novella called  The Cherry Jar. Jake grew up Unitarian Universalist, inspired by Sunday School teachers active in the Civil Rights movement. He is heartened to work alongside others these days, Unitarian Universalist and otherwise, who carry on in that tradition in East Tennessee, especially with regard to the human rights of undocumented workers and their families.

The U.U. Fellowship meets every Sunday at 10:30 a.m. at Posada de la Aldea, Ancha de San Antonio 15, and welcomes people of all ages, races, religions, sexual orientation, and gender identity. For information about our Children’s Sunday Program, contact us at epgoodwin@hotmail.com. The meeting room is wheelchair accessible. For more information, visit our website at uufsma.org.

Mark Your Calendars for These Upcoming Events!

The Caminamos Juntos (We Walk Together) project will be making a presentation at the Occupy SMA meeting on Monday, April 23 at 1:00 PM in the Quinta Loreto TV Room.  This program is supported by the UUFSMA to assist Mexican nationals who have been deported.  Everyone is invited to attend this event to learn more about this program.

Circle Cena

The Circle Cena is a social gathering for people who meet at a host's house once a month for either a pot luck of botanas and dessert or a full course dinner. The hosts coordinate the event as to how many guests they can accommodate and who brings what food to share. As the groups change from cena to cena, it’s a wonderful opportunity to get to know other UUs.

The next Circle Cena is Monday, May 7. Please sign up as host or guest at the Welcome Table after Sunday service or contact Arlena Lawrence, lawrencearlena@yahoo.com.
Welcome Table

At the Welcome Table we have, for your reading pleasure, the Community Connections brochure. It is filled with everything you ever wanted to know about the UUFSMA - a bit of history, events, who we are and what we do. Pick one up next Sunday.
